Title: ‘The Portal’, Illustration Art by Anna Heimkreiter (2020)
About the artwork: This artwork holds a special place in my heart. It is the first piece I finished after my sudden inspiration to become an illustrator while traveling in Italy. I had become a little wary of traveling ‘just’ for the sake of traveling and something inside of me was looking for a new project to take on.
While I was couchsurfing in Naples, my host was still sleeping. The room I stayed in was full of his grandfather’s art – he called it ‘the artist’s room’. Since there were some sheets of paper and colored pencils lying around, I decided to draw a little something, just as a little thank you to my host. But that’s when a rush of inspiration hit me.
My entire body and soul remembered that this is something I truly loved doing as a child and I somehow felt that practicing this might lead to something. And even though what I painted right then was rather mediocre, a voice inside of me whispered: Hey, what if I became an illustrator? And so I started moving my life in that direction.
This particular painting came to life about a few weeks after this special moment, first hand-painted with watercolors and later recreated digitally for you to fully enjoy every little detail of this psychedelic jungle.
