Title: ‘Impermanence’, Fine Art Photography by Anna Heimkreiter (Self-portrait, 2021)
Location: Karwendel Alpine Park, Austria
About the artwork: As a traveler, you sometimes get to make the most unusual work experiences – and so one year, I applied to work on a mountain hut, close to my hometown in Bavaria, but just behind the Austrian Border. The mountains of the Karwendel Alps are stunning and I could not believe my luck when I was told I got the job and I would spend two months there in autumn.
As soon as I arrived, I fell in love with the place and its magical mountain views – especially the sunset there was pure magic and, at 1800m of altitude, just perfectly silent and tranquil. Even a herd of deer was passing by each evening. Then, the employment fell through, after only 3 days of being there – for reasons that had nothing to do with me, but still, I could not help but feel terribly disappointed.
To process my emotions and to make the most of my last evening there, I hiked up the highest mountain around for sunset. Some self-portrait therapy was needed – and it worked, as always. Nature helped me to find peace with the situation and witnessing the beauty of the sunset helped me to see that where one door closes, another one opens. I reflected a lot on impermanence that evening which eventually became the title of this image.
We do not know when and how our life changes, only that, ironically, change is the only constant in our lives. Everything arises, changes, and eventually disappears. As the Buddhist philosophy teaches, there is no point in holding onto things that are impermanent – it only causes suffering. So I chose to let go and be open to whatever comes next.
