Title: ‘Multitude’, Fine Art Photography by Anna Heimkreiter (Self-portrait, 2020)
Location: Oaxaca, Mexico
About the artwork: I want to be honest with you – a lot of my art carries deep meaning and reveals some of the most intimate aspects of my soul. But once in a while, I just mess around and rather accidentally create something cool. Like with this image.
During my travels in Mexico, one of my all-time favorite countries, I was exploring Oaxaca, a wonderful place full of culture and biodiversity. One of the most characteristic plants of Mexico is the agave (which is also the origin of the traditional spirit Mezcal). So as I walked past Oaxaca city’s cathedral with its agave-filled square, I somehow had the inspiration to create a composite with a multitude of hands reaching through the prickly leaves of an agave.
So I started taking dozens of photos with my hands in a lot of different places all over the plant. Needless to say, it is a busy place and people were probably wondering what on earth I’m doing. Truth be told, I did not quite know myself until I finished editing the picture, transporting the scene from a busy city place to the desert.
You could see it as an embrace of nature and human, but as with all my artworks, it is up to you what you see in them – I just send them out into the world after the act of creation. The interpretation is yours alone. But one thing is for certain: this artwork looks pretty damn cool printed and framed, and will surely enhance your space with its warm atmosphere.
