Title: ‘Peyote’, Illustration Art by Anna Heimkreiter (2021)
From the series: ‘States of Consciousness’, a collection of 7 artworks on plant medicine, psychedelics and the expansion of human consciousness
About the artwork: I was able to witness the powers of Peyote during my travels in Mexico and wanted to depict its beautiful legend in my psychedelic art series. It is a plant full of masculine energy, grandfatherly wisdom, a bringer of clarity, heightening your senses.
The artwork shows a blue deer as its central figure – it is Kauyumaria, the spirit that guided the native people of Wixarikas into the desert. Legend has it that young hunters were sent out to save their starving tribe. After days without luck, a blue deer (el venado azul) appeared to them.
As they followed it, the deer itself transformed into Peyote. The young hunters took the plants back to their village and reported to the elders what they saw. When they consumed the planets, their physical hunger was taken away, but also their spiritual thirst was fulfilled.
Since then, the Wixarikas honor the sacred medicine by undertaking a yearly pilgrimage to the desert and sitting with Peyote. Until today, they are the protectors of Peyote – and there are many beautiful lessons to be learned from this sacred medicine.
